What is AI slop?

According to Merriam-Webster, “slop” refers to a type of digital content that has been generated in bulk (typically by an AI) with a focus on quantity rather than quality; therefore, it’s not really accurate to say that the definition identifies “good” or “not-so-good” uses of AI but instead indicates the result of overwhelming the same channels that we all use for learning, purchasing and decision-making.

AI can certainly help us create documents, translate, prototype, etc., but “slop” refers to the end result when getting something out onto the market matters more than what it actually means. Slop is content created with the intent of being mass-distributed rather than being of use to anyone.

There has been some research to date about slop being present in various forms, including generic essays, clickbait articles, images that are uncanny, deepfake pornography, synthetic video,.; they all provide the same experience via varying formats and have more noise and less trust associated with them.

So you have a simple method for creating slop: create the product quickly, distribute it as broadly as possible and do it repeatedly.
