Such water demands stem from the need to keep cool millions of servers that process our AI queries and other computing needs in a growing number of warehouse-sized data processing centers. That's AI Slop, You Bot!
People use “AI slop” not only to identify AI-generated material, but also to accuse, shame, dismiss, gatekeep, and signal belonging. A 2026 study analyzing 25 million comments from Reddit and Hacker News found that accusations of AI use increased more than tenfold, increasingly functioning as a form of social gatekeeping around perceived authenticity — even when the accused text was actually human-written.
"The chaotic atmosphere that may result from emergent AI technology in the next five years may fuel large-scale protests that devolve into civil unrest and anti-tech violent extremist activity, especially in large urban areas such as New York City,"

As opposition to AI and data centres grows, US law enforcement agencies are monitoring anti-technology activists and protests more closely. WIRED has reviewed over 1,000 pages of government documents which show that 'anti-tech extremism' is emerging as a new area of concern.

The reports include peaceful protests, online criticism, and activities such as photographing or observing security measures. In one case, a video criticising a Georgia data centre was circulated as a potential threat, despite not advocating violence.

Civil liberties advocates warn that such broad definitions can blur the line between political protest and genuine threats of violence.
Job postings and interviews with senior security officials at Anthropic show that the frontier AI lab is building out an extensive monitoring system to keep tabs on activists who oppose the rapid development of artificial intelligence.

In addition to monitoring activists in the vicinity of Anthropic executives and keeping tabs on protests near physical Anthropic assets, the firm is also implementing a “pre-crime” approach, attempting to predict incidents before they happen. In some cases, that also means reporting suspects to police before a crime occurs.
The Dystopian Fictionalization of Data Centers
How Much of Data-Center Activism Is Really AI Slop?
Anti-AI sentiment is genuine, but its online expression looks stranger and stranger.
People in Bangladesh are creating AI-generated memes targeting American data centres, not because they are opposed to AI per se, but because Facebook rewards engagement. The content is designed to look local and relatable in order to provoke reactions and generate shares. The political message is almost incidental; what matters is that people interact with the content.
How Much of Data-Center Activism Is Really AI Slop?Anti-AI sentiment is genuine, but its online expression looks stranger and stranger. As opposition to AI data centres grows, content farms have discovered that anti-data centre posts generate engagement. They use AI to produce endless images of landscapes, protesters, and slogans against data centres, often recycling the same formats across different states. The protest becomes just another form of AI-generated content.
